Brick dimensions – standard Hungarian sizes

Brick dimensions are essential for material calculations: solid bricks 250×120×65 mm, and large-format bricks 290×140×65 mm, while B30 block bricks need 300×175×140 mm. The table below lists common Hungarian masonry brick dimensions, wall thicknesses and bricks per square metre, based on manufacturer data sheets.

What do the three dimension numbers mean?

In Hungarian practice, the dimension order is length (or wall thickness) × width × height, in millimetres, meaning the third number is always height. Wall thickness is represented by a different dimension depending on product type:

  • Block bricks and hollow clay units (B30, Porotherm): the first dimension is wall thickness. Porotherm 30 N+F (300×250×238 mm) and B30 (300×175×140 mm) both make 30 cm walls, hence the 30 in their names.
  • Standard and large-format solid bricks: wall thickness depends on the bond: solid bricks make 12 cm half-brick, 25 cm one-brick and 38 cm one-and-a-half-brick walls, including joints.
  • Ytong (aerated concrete): the manufacturer uses length × height × thickness, so the third dimension, 300 mm, is wall thickness in a 600×200×300 mm unit.

How dimensions give bricks per m²

Per-m² quantities come from the brick's visible wall face and joints. For example, a solid brick in a 12 cm wall:

  • One brick in the wall 250 mm long and 65 mm high of wall area.
  • With a 1 cm joint: 260 × 75 mm = 0.0195 m² per unit.
  • 1 ÷ 0.0195 ≈ 51.3, rounded to 52 pcs/m².

The same logic gives B30 35–36 pcs/m² (175×140 mm face plus joints) and Porotherm 30 N+F 16 pcs/m² (250×238 mm face). For complete walls, openings and pallets, use the Calculator calculates for you. For whole-house requirements, the separate guide guide.

A short history of Hungarian brick dimensions

Before the 1850s, dimensions varied by factory: 27–32 cm length, 13–16 cm width and 5–8 cm height. Standardisation spreading from German-speaking countries brought to Central Europe the 30×15×7 cm large-format brick – in practice varying by up to ±1 cm between factories. From the early 20th century, it was replaced by the more accurately produced solid brick (250×120×65 mm), still the traditional solid masonry and facing size.

Today's large-format solid brick sold today measures 290×140×65 mm and is mainly made for heritage restoration and repairs to old walls. Residential construction now largely uses fewer, hollow block bricks (B30: 35–36 rather than 102–104 solid bricks/m²), followed by tongue-and-groove clay units (Porotherm N+F: 16 pcs/m²).

Brick dimension questions

What are standard solid brick dimensions?

Solid bricks have a nominal size of 250×120×65 mm. With 1 cm joints, 12 cm walls need 52 pcs/m², 25 cm walls 102–104 and 38 cm walls about 155. See the calculation in the Calculator does it for you.

What are B30 brick dimensions?

B30's nominal size is 300×175×140 mm, for 30 cm walls and 35–36 pcs/m² (Bakonytherm: 35, Putnoki: 36). Older B30 units were also intended for 30 cm walls; measure an actual recovered unit when repairing an old wall. Details: B30 brick calculator.

What are large-format brick dimensions?

Modern large-format solid bricks measure 290×140×65 mm: about 44 pcs/m² for 14 cm walls and 88 for 29–30 cm walls. From the 1850s, 30×15×7 cm was the historical standard, with factory variations of up to ±1 cm, so measure old walls.

What do brick dimension numbers mean?

Dimensions usually mean length (or wall thickness) × width × height in mm; the third number is height. For B30 and Porotherm, the first is wall thickness (Porotherm 30 → 300 mm → 30 cm wall). Ytong is an exception: length × height × thickness, so 300 is the wall thickness in a 600×200×300 mm unit.
